The Lime Life

Do you love limes ?

We have been lucky enough to be blessed with an abundance of limes. This year has been good for our citrus so I thought I’d take minute to highlight this wonderful fruit. I think limes often get overlooked because they are essentially an ingredient rather than a stand alone fruit, but let’s not discount how important they are. Margaritas anyone ??

🍈🍋 Exploring the Wonderful World of Limes! 🍋🍈

Limes, with their vibrant citrusy flavor, are not only a staple in countless recipes but also pack a punch of vitamin C and antioxidants. Let’s take a delightful journey through the diverse varieties of this zesty fruit:

  1. Persian Limes: Also known as Tahiti limes, these are the most common type found in grocery stores. They boast a bright green hue and offer a balanced flavor profile, making them ideal for both sweet and savory dishes.
  2. Key Limes: Small and round with a thin, smooth rind, Key limes are famous for their intense aroma and tartness. They are a key ingredient in the beloved Key lime pie, adding a refreshing twist to desserts, beverages, and marinades.
  3. Kaffir Limes: Characterized by their wrinkled, bumpy skin, Kaffir limes are native to Southeast Asia. While their juice is too bitter for consumption, their leaves are highly prized in Thai and Indonesian cuisine, imparting a distinctive citrusy fragrance to curries and soups.
  4. Makrut Limes: Formerly known as Thai limes, these are similar to Kaffir limes and are primarily cultivated for their aromatic leaves. The zest of Makrut limes is also used to infuse dishes with a burst of citrusy essence.
  5. Sweet Limes: Contrary to their name, sweet limes are not as tart as other varieties. They have a milder, sweeter flavor reminiscent of oranges, making them a favorite for juicing and snacking.
  6. Finger Limes: Also called caviar limes, these unique fruits contain tiny, bead-like pulp inside. With a tangy flavor and a texture akin to caviar, they add a pop of color and taste to salads, seafood, and cocktails.
  7. Rangpur Limes: A cross between mandarin oranges and citron, Rangpur limes have a sour flavor with hints of sweetness. They are often used to make marmalades, chutneys, and beverages.

Each variety of lime brings its own distinct characteristics to the table, elevating dishes with its citrusy zest and versatility. Whether you’re squeezing it over a savory taco, mixing it into a refreshing cocktail, or incorporating it into a zesty marinade, limes are sure to brighten up any culinary creation! 🌟

Here on the ranch we have two types ,

One is the Mexican Lime (key lime)

Brutus

And the common California (Persian limes)

Common lime that’s been on the tree too long.

The small limes Mexican limes, also known as Mexican key limes or simply key limes. They are smaller and more rounded than the Persian limes commonly found in grocery stores. Mexican limes are known for their intense flavor and aroma, which adds a distinct tanginess to dishes and beverages. They are often used in Mexican and Latin American cuisine, particularly in dishes like ceviche, margaritas, and key lime pie.

Personally I love both !

Recently a family member who is in the holistic space told me they use lime juice as a deodorant and they said it works well. I have to admit I’m skeptical because I have sensitive skin. However I appreciate a natural solution so I asked the internet to provide me a recipe.

Making a homemade deodorant with lime juice is possible, but it may not be as effective or convenient as commercial deodorants. Here’s a simple recipe you can try:

Ingredients:

  • Fresh lime juice
  • Baking soda
  • Cornstarch or arrowroot powder

Instructions:

  1. Squeeze the juice from fresh limes into a small bowl.
  2. Mix equal parts of lime juice and baking soda to form a paste.
  3. Add a small amount of cornstarch or arrowroot powder to thicken the mixture and absorb moisture.
  4. Stir until well combined.
  5. Transfer the mixture to a clean, airtight container.

To use:

  • Apply a small amount of the homemade deodorant to clean, dry underarms.
  • Allow it to dry before dressing.

****Keep in mind that lime juice may cause irritation for some individuals, especially if applied to freshly shaved or sensitive skin. It’s a good idea to do a patch test on a small area of skin before using it regularly. Additionally, homemade deodorants may not provide as long-lasting odor protection as commercial products, so you may need to reapply throughout the day****

Would you try it ? let me know if you do.

Maybe I’ll stick to my margaritas and guacamole 🙂
